The year was 1992.
The 80's had finally come to an end and the 90's were in their infancy.
The Berlin wall was coming down, and the Soviet Union was in its death
throes. The Silicon Valley was coming out of a long and hard
recession and Y2K wasn't an acronym. The United States was
in a state of euphoria after soundly defeating Saddam Hussein and the face
of fascism. Roxy the Dog was born.
Sharing a house in San Mateo, California,
in the San Francisco Bay Area, lived three tired and hungry rugby players:
Dwayne Parker, Tony Severance, and Karl
Liang. In April of 1992, Dwayne went to Halifax,
Nova Scotia (that's in Canada) to attend an engineering conference.
He came back with 20 live lobsters the same weekend as the Golden Gate
tournament. The weekend tournament was spent playing rugby, drinking
beer and chasing girls trying to convince them to come to what was to become
the 1st Annual Lobster Feed.
The 1st Feed was a great success with
consumption of all 20 lobsters and much beer. A good time was had
by all, but tragedy would soon strike... Dwayne Parker broke up with his
girlfriend (whom he would later marry) moved back to San Diego later that
year. We were devastated, but the remaining residents of the house
in San Mateo were determined to make the tradition live on. In 1995,
I learned that I was allergic to lobster, but the tradition went on!
Then in 1996, Tony Severance got married and moved out; again, the show
went on. Since that day in April of 1992, women have come and gone
out of my life, jobs have changed several times over, but one thing remains
constant: the Lobster Feed has become an annual summer right of passage.
Some Feeds have been relatively quiet,
some have not, but one thing remains the same: strange things
happen when you get a bunch of drunk people together intent on killing
lobsters. At times guests have brought stethoscopes to see if lobsters
really do scream, lobster races (and betting) have been arranged,
elaborate lobster funerals, lobster beer, and much more....
With my travel schedule and my friends
spread out all over the world, it is very difficult for me to see all my
friends in one place and the Feed has become a celebration of friendship.
This Feed is for my friends and for me to see all of you. Please
join me in celebrating the friendships I've made over the years and participate
in the camaraderie by attending the 10th Annual Lobster Feed.
All preliminary indicators show this
year's feed will be a blow out event. I am expecting anywhere from
60 to 80 people from all walks of life and the four corners of the globe:
from New Zealand to Chicago and New York, Los Angeles to Canada; some rugby
morons, some work friends, a few normal people (wives), and a certain black dog who
will negotiate for what she believes will be her fair share of whatever
you are eating.
